Hob Uid: 1525508
Location :
Rochdale
Non Civil Parish
Grid Ref : SD8779616025
Summary : Bank and ditch cutting off a promontory, surviving as degraded earthworks, possibly prehistoric or medieval.
More information : Bank and ditch cutting off a promontory, possibly prehistoric or medieval. Survives as degraded earthworks. The bank underlies a dilapidated drystone wall likely to be of 18th or early 19th century origin and a gate through the wall may coincide with a way through the earthwork. The bank is straight, standing up to 0.6m high with a basal width of around 6m. There may have been ditches on both sides, but post-medieval ploughing up to the edge of the bank has degraded and distorted their original form. The site was surveyed after correspondence from Mr S Mendelson. (1)
